"Sixty is not the new forty; it's a triumphant celebration of six incredible decades of growth, wisdom, and the joy of embracing life as it unfolds"
I'm writing this week's newsletter from the enchanting island of Bali, where I find myself immersed in the tranquillity of a beautiful eco-resort. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to embark on a month-long celebration of my 60th birthday, which will conclude with a joyful gathering in June.
As I reflect on my journey as the founder of the Silver Sirens community, I acknowledge that I've occasionally grappled with feelings of self-doubt, questioning my ability to lead due to my relatively smooth ageing process. At one point, I even considered passing the baton to a friend whom I believed was better suited for the role.
However, my connection with Silver Sirens has evolved, much like the feeling of slipping into a familiar, comfortable coat. As I've grown older, I've become more confident in my role, recognising that my life experiences and insights continue to empower me to guide our community with more understanding and wisdom. I've always believed that, like fine wine, I would only improve with age.
As I enter my 60s and move beyond the youngest cohort of our community, I am filled with anticipation and excitement for the new era of growth and connection that awaits us. While I found myself caught in the trap of comparison leading up to this milestone, a 30-day spiritual practice helped me refocus on my truth: comparison should only serve as a measure of personal growth.
Through introspection, I have acknowledged my growth from my 40s to my 50s and am entering this new decade with greater strength and balance across all areas of my life. As long as I continue growing, that's what matters most.
Birthdays hold a special place in my heart, and this year, I am particularly grateful to share this momentous occasion with my childhood best friend, Angela. We enjoyed a week of relaxation (not entirely accurate, as I'm still working, but it's work that energises me) and contemplation at a stunning resort, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
On my birthday, I will be treating Angela to a tour of my beloved hometown, Sydney, followed by an intimate dinner the following evening. While tradition suggests that friends should treat the birthday celebrant, I cherish the opportunity to provide my loved ones with unforgettable experiences, creating treasured memories, and expressing my gratitude for their unwavering support.
I welcome this new decade, confident that I will continue to blossom into the person I am meant to be, learning to quieten my fears while focusing more on joy, and releasing unnecessary burdens. Here's to celebrating life, growth, and the extraordinary Silver Sirens community that has become an essential part of my journey.
The Joys of Turning 60!
Turning 60 is a significant milestone for many women, as it represents a unique time of transition, self-discovery, and empowerment. Here are a few aspects that make this age particularly distinctive:
Redefining Beauty: Women in their 60s often develop a newfound appreciation for their bodies and embrace the changes that come with age. This can lead to a more authentic and inclusive understanding of beauty, encouraging self-acceptance and self-confidence.
Achievement and Wisdom: By the age of 60, many women have accumulated a wealth of life experiences and achievements, both personally and professionally. This can create a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as provide valuable insights to share with others.
Shifting Priorities: At this stage, women often re-evaluate their priorities, which may result in a focus on personal growth, relationships, and overall well-being. This shift can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Breaking Stereotypes: Women in their 60s challenge ageist stereotypes by showcasing their vitality, strength, and capacity for growth. This can inspire others to embrace ageing positively and continue pursuing their passions and dreams.
Nurturing Relationships: With a lifetime of experiences, women at this age often develop a strong network of friends and family. These connections provide support, love, and shared experiences, enriching their lives and fostering a sense of community.
