"By encouraging open conversations around finances, we empower women to break free from shame and take control of their financial journeys"
Faith Agugu

Throughout this month, I have participated in numerous discussions on finances, including attending three enlightening masterclasses focused on financial health and wellbeing. Besides these valuable learning opportunities, I also attended the Silver Connection lunch, which turned out to be not only a delightful culinary experience but also an impactful platform for discussing significant financial issues.
As we explored the topic of finance at the Silver Connection lunch, a recurring theme emerged: many of us struggle with feelings of shame regarding our financial situations. This insightful experience underscored the importance of open and honest dialogue in reducing shame and empowering women to take charge of their financial journeys.
These combined experiences prompted me to reflect on the importance of vulnerability in cultivating financial empowerment. By highlighting the challenges we face, we can cultivate a supportive environment where women feel comfortable sharing their financial struggles and successes. This shared understanding enables us to learn from one another and dismantle the barriers that hinder our economic growth and well-being.
Shame thrives in silence, and for many women over 50, discussing financial challenges can feel taboo. Society often expects us to have it all figured out by this stage in our lives, which can make admitting to money struggles even more difficult. However, as I listened to the brave women sharing their stories at the Silver Connection lunch, it became evident that the best way to break the cycle of shame is to speak openly about our experiences.
There are numerous reasons why discussing money benefits women over 50:
Learning from one another: Sharing our successes, failures, and lessons learned can provide invaluable insights and help others avoid potential pitfalls.
Finding support and camaraderie: By breaking the silence, we discover that we're not alone in our struggles, deepening a sense of community and support.
Increasing financial literacy: Open conversations can help demystify complex financial topics, empowering us to make more informed decisions.
Encouraging healthy financial habits: Discussing money encourages us to reflect on our attitudes and behaviours, inspiring positive changes in how we approach our finances.
The Silver Connection lunch was a powerful reminder that creating safe spaces for women over 50 to share their experiences can help dismantle the shame surrounding finances. When we open up to one another, we find strength in vulnerability and pave the way for a future where women support each other in achieving their financial goals.
In the words of Brené Brown, "Shame cannot survive being spoken. It cannot survive empathy." So let's continue to speak up, share our stories, and support one another as we navigate the world of finance and embrace the wisdom that comes with age. Together, we can empower women over 50 to overcome shame and build a brighter financial future.
