Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Rituals of Renewal for Women Over 50

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence; it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare"
Audre Lorde
I used to feel guilty about taking time off, believing that working long hours was the only way to prove my professionalism and worth. But that mindset almost cost me my mental and physical health when I collapsed from burnout. I've chosen to live differently now—I’m unapologetic about prioritising rest and taking time for myself.
Self-care in midlife and beyond is not just a luxury but a non-negotiable foundation for resilience, growth, and vibrancy. As a therapist, encouraging clients to set self-care goals from the outset creates essential reserves for when deeper healing work takes place. Having once dismissed self-care as frivolous, it’s now clear it’s the bedrock of sustaining health, joy, and efficacy, especially for women navigating the second half of life.
Why Self-Care is Essential After 50
Research consistently shows that self-care improves physical health, boosts mental resilience, lowers disease risk, and increases happiness for women over 50. It also helps counteract negative self-image and age-related stereotypes, keeping women vibrant, confident, and connected to their values as they age.
My Self-Care Ritual: Self-Care Wednesdays
Since June of this year, I’ve been giving myself every second Wednesday off. I guard this time fiercely, even if it means working late the night before to clear my schedule. Here’s what a typical self-care day looks like for me.
Sleep in until 7 am, skipping the usual 5 am alarm—starting the day well-rested nourishes my body and mind.
Gentle meditation in bed, rather than at my shrine, for a slow, mindful entry into the day.
Swim at the Coogee Women’s Pool, soaking up sun and feminine energy, reconnecting to nature and community.
Spend a few hours reading—feeding my mind and soul with inspiration and relaxation. I am currently ready, The Whales' Last Song by OG Silver Sirens, Joanne Fedler.
A treatment (sometimes a massage or beauty appointment) or a session at the gym—moving and celebrating what my body can do. This week, I am going to the Stretch Lab for a 50-minute stretch session.
Dress up and head to lunch at my favourite restaurant, usually accompanied by a good book, savouring the solitude and good food.
Rest for a few hours, again with a good book.
Finish with dinner and connection—catching up with a friend rounds out the day in warmth and laughter.
Memorable Self-Care Experiences
A highlight was trying my first colonic irrigation—nervous but curious, I found myself fascinated watching waste leave my body on a monitor. Strangely fun and deeply cleansing, it felt like the ultimate act of letting go and self-renewal. I’ll definitely be doing it again!
Self-Care Tips
Get regular, quality sleep. Consistently aim for 7–9 hours to support brain and body health.
Move your body. Find enjoyable ways to stay active—walking, swimming, dancing, yoga, or gym work all help bones, heart, mood, and flexibility.
Eat nourishing foods. Emphasise fruits, vegetables, plant-based proteins, and limit processed foods for energy and longevity.
Nurture connection. Prioritise supportive friendships and social activities, as these have a profound impact on wellbeing and happiness.
Practice mindfulness. Meditation, gratitude practices, and reflective time all enhance emotional balance and stress resilience.
Protect boundaries. Learn to say no without guilt and create regular time for yourself—self-care isn’t selfish, it’s foundational.
The Power of Redefining Age Through Self-Care
Women over 50 face unique pressures around ageing, beauty, and usefulness, but self-care is a tool for reclaiming vibrancy and agency at every stage of life. Prioritising wellbeing, joy, and growth defies outdated stereotypes and models of thriving for future generations—proving age is no barrier to feeling radiant or deeply alive.
Every Silver Siren deserves rituals that replenish, challenge, and delight. Self-care is serious—fun, powerful, and absolutely essential.
